I am a Visual Journalist specializing in Photo and Video. I studied at the storied School of Visual Journalism at Brooks Institute of Photography during its heyday (when P.F. Bentley, Jim McNay, Rick Ray and several other seasoned and gifted individuals were still there).

From teaching English and backpacking in Kosovo to helping with reconstruction after the tsunami in Sri Lanka twice, I’ve been blessed to see a lot of the world. Most recently, I worked from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Philippines and Bangladesh as a VJ, mostly doing video.

I live with my amazing wife in Orlando, Florida, where I manage the video department at Wycliffe and freelance on the side.

  1. OK. I believe this is you, Jon. Right? My good friend Jon Shuler? As in Florida Jon? I believe you are looking for a place to work out some of your bigger questions… I’ve read enough to be a little confused by the randomness… (try spell check before you publish…) but also to connect with your sense that new this technology allows us the opportunity to transcend traditional views of journalism; that the collaborative Wikipedia approach, as opposed to some stale, static view of truth, has already won out. Hangers-on to traditional assumptions are just that. Hangers-on.

You’re not lookin’ for one of those jobs. (Like USA Today or People Mag.) No way! You’re fired up about process… and you’re lookin’ for a few partners in the journey. Hey… let’s go for it. Quit toyin’ with this thing and make somethin’ happen. Ken

PS That John 8 thing came right from RCC. TC skipped the whole passage. Ha!

  2. yeah, Spelling to improve shortly Ken…. 🙂

Thanks for the comments and encouragement.

  3. Are you on Facebook, Jon? Let me know your URL if you are. 🙂

  4. Just writing to show a quick show of support. I’m currently writing a thesis on the imbalance with the Congo coverage, as well as acting a video professional myself. I’m also toying with the idea of making a doc on DR Congo.

Anyway, I like your blog a lot – all the best with your work. Hope to cross paths sometime.

    Cheers,
    Simon
